Many taxpayers believe their job is done once they submit their income-tax return online. However, filing your ITR is just the first step. The process remains incomplete until you verify it, and the Income Tax Department gives you only 30 days to complete this crucial step.
What is ITR E-Verification
E-verification is the process of authenticating your filed income-tax return. When you file your ITR electronically, the system generates an ITR-V (Income Tax Return Verification) form. This document needs to be verified to confirm that you are indeed the person who filed the return. Until this verification happens, the Income Tax Department does not process your return, meaning your refund won't be issued and the return won't be considered valid.
Why the 30-Day Deadline Matters
The Income Tax Department mandates that taxpayers complete e-verification within 30 days of filing their return. Missing this deadline has serious consequences. Your ITR will be treated as invalid or not filed at all. This means you'll need to file the return again from scratch, and if you're already past the original due date, you may face penalties and interest charges.
Additionally, without a verified return, you cannot claim any tax refund due to you. The processing of your return simply won't begin. This can create complications if you need your ITR acknowledgment for loan applications, visa processing, or other official purposes.
Methods to E-Verify Your ITR
The Income Tax Department offers multiple convenient methods for e-verification, making it easier than ever to complete this essential step.
Aadhaar OTP Method
This is the quickest and most popular method. You receive a one-time password on your mobile number registered with Aadhaar. Simply enter this OTP on the e-filing portal, and your verification is complete instantly. This method works only if your Aadhaar is linked with your PAN.
Net Banking Method
If you have net banking enabled with certain authorized banks, you can verify your ITR by logging into your bank account and completing the authentication process. Most major public and private sector banks support this facility.
Bank Account Validation
You can verify through your bank account number that's pre-validated with the Income Tax Department. This method uses Electronic Verification Code (EVC) sent to your registered mobile number or email.
Demat Account Method
Taxpayers with demat accounts can generate an EVC through their depository participant and use it to verify their return on the e-filing portal.
ATM Method
Some banks allow you to generate an EVC through their ATM machines by using your debit card. This EVC can then be used for verification on the income tax website.
Step-by-Step E-Verification Process
Log into the income tax e-filing portal using your credentials. Navigate to the 'e-Verify Return' option under the 'e-File' menu. You'll see a list of returns that are pending verification. Select the relevant assessment year and click on the return you want to verify.
Choose your preferred verification method from the available options. If using Aadhaar OTP, click on 'Generate Aadhaar OTP' and enter the six-digit code you receive on your registered mobile number. For other methods, follow the specific instructions provided on screen.
Once you successfully verify, you'll receive a confirmation message on screen and also via email at your registered email address. The status of your return will change to 'ITR Verified' on the dashboard.
What If You Miss the 30-Day Window
If you miss the 30-day deadline, you'll need to send a physical signed copy of ITR-V to the Centralized Processing Centre in Bengaluru via ordinary or speed post. The address is printed on the ITR-V form itself. However, this process takes significantly longer and may delay your refund processing by several months.
Checking Your Verification Status
You can always check whether your ITR has been verified by logging into the e-filing portal and viewing your filed returns. The status will clearly indicate whether the return is verified or pending verification. You'll also receive email confirmations at each stage of the process.
